I was hired by US comedy supremo Lorne Michaels (Saturday Night Live), who wanted me to create visual gags and design/board the movie for director Steve Barron.
This film was a lot of fun to make. I even had may own little office at the Paramount lot in Hollywood. Working with a particular generation of SNL comedy stars was a hoot and many of them were doing their first movies, like Adam Sandler and David Spade.
All I had to go on with Coneheads was based on the TV sketch, which amounted to a living room with a couch and three Conehead characters. From that, I extrapolated an entire Conehead universe of cone-shaped spaceships and idiosyncratic technology (which had to be somehow ‘funny’) like ‘finger-fones’ and fast-food eating troughs.
